about

A heartbreaker, based on the true story of a Kentucky mining town

lyrics

They raped our land
For 25 grand
Faith moves mountains
But money moves man
Our way of life
Claimed by twilight
Now there’s nothing in this holler left for Quinnie
To do but die

Lawrence married Quinnie and they built this house
Back when miners still dug coal underground
Lindytown was just a dot on Kentucky’s map
Mountain folk doing mountain folk things

In the shadow of the mountain Quinnie’s garden grew
While progress carved up the land she knew
Till the woods her boy wandered in had been stripped bare
Slurry coursing through the hillside’s veins

They raped our land
For 25 grand
Faith moves mountains
But money moves man
Our way of life
Claimed by twilight
Now there’s nothing in this holler left for Quinnie
To do but die

When the Massey outfit came in handing out green bills
Paid the Webbs and the Workmans to leave these hills
But Quinnie’s mem’ry is fading and she gets confused
Lawrence couldn’t take her from her hometown

Then they blew the mountaintop the day Lawrence died
Now the tears and the rockfly fill her eyes
Quinnie’s boy rocks beside her in the failing light
The last ghost in Lindytown

They raped our land
For 25 grand
Faith moves mountains
But money moves man
Our way of life
Claimed by twilight
Now there’s nothing in this holler left for Quinnie
To do but die

Jenny Anne Mannan Spokane, Washington

I grew up on the side of a mountain. With a bunch of siblings. I spent most of my childhood on a bus with my family, touring around North America, peddling our wares of song. Music has taken me all over the world, from the mountains of NE Washington to Nashville and back again. I've played for audiences large and small, and nowadays my 4 favorite fans are the love of my life and our 3 babies. ... more
